Project Big Boy Room: A Sophisticated Space With Grown Up Style

Today I’m sharing a project that’s near and dear to my heart — a big boy room for my friend Danielle’s adorable son Nathan. When I started this project a year ago, I didn’t have much design experience, but Danielle trusted my style and for that I am forever grateful! It helped that she has amazing taste and is super decisive — she was a dream to work with! Ok, now for the goods on this cute little boy’s bedroom…

Nathan was finally ready for a big boy bed, and was moving out of his nursery to make room for his new baby sister. Instead of purchasing kids furniture that has an expiry date, it was important for the furniture to be able to transition with Nathan from now until young adulthood. So I kept the big ticket items simple and classic, and brought in whimsy with the accessories. We chose the B2C bed from EQ3 and West Elm night tables, both so timeless. Instead of sconces, which can be expensive to install, I suggested going with bedside lamps that have a similar look and feel. The Ikea Ranarp lamps are so easy to turn on and off — apparently Nathan loves using them!

I brought in playful pattern with removable wallpaper, which can easily be taken down once Nathan outgrows the print. We chose X Marks the Spot paper from Chasing Paper, and it seriously makes such a statement! I love the hand-drawn quality of the pattern, almost as though it was doodled in a notebook. I had so much fun mixing patterns, including pillows from Tonic Living in their Draper Stripe fabric, Beach Buffalo Check drapes in Moonstone Grey, also from Tonic Living (which is my absolute favourite source for fabric) and the cutest cartoonish car print sheets from Pottery Barn Kids.

Keeping with the classic look and feel, a Parsons-style desk from Wayfair.ca has an iconic silhouette. The Eames-style chair from Structube is so reasonable, and bonus points that it’s wipeable so mom and dad don’t have to worry about it getting dirty! Almost all of the accessories on the floating shelves are from HomeSense and Indigo. Special shout out to the adorable polka dot plant basket from Lorena Canals.

I’ve gotten so many compliments on this room (my husband says he would totally move in lol) and it really warms my heart to know that the family is so happy with it! I wrote more about this big boy room on houseandhome.com — check it out here if you’d like!
