The Magic Of Unread Books

People often ask if I’ve read all the books on display in my living room. I haven’t, but maybe one day! There’s something so charming and delightful about a stack of old books that you could pick up and pour through at any given moment. Even Nassim Nicholas Taleb, American essayist says so in his book, The Black Swan:

“Read books are far less valuable than unread ones… You will accumulate more knowledge and more books as you grow older, and the growing number of unread books on the shelves will look at you menacingly. Indeed, the more you know, the larger the rows of unread books.”

The Japanese have a word for piles of unread books — as they do for just about everything — and it’s so eloquent…

Tsundoku: buying books and not reading them; letting books pile up on shelves or floors or nightstands.

I always loved my stack of (mostly) unread books and only realized why after learning this word. Not only do they make my awkward nook look beautiful and purposeful, but they’re full of information and wonder just waiting to be devoured. Pretty cool, huh?

My stack of books was inspired by the colour-coordinated bookshelves at Bobbi Brown’s boutique hotel, The George, pictured above. Wouldn’t sitting in this room surrounded by stacks of old books feel kind of thrilling? That’s the magic of unread books!
